Angelina once said that Brad Pitt was ‘really the only person’ that she talks to because she doesn’t ‘have a lot of friends’.
And the 41-year-old actress doesn’t have much of a relationship with her family either.
In the wake of her shocking decision to file for divorce from her husband after two years of marriage and 12 years together
Angelina’s step-grandmother has spoken out about their estrangement.
‘Angelina hasn’t got many people left in her life,’ Elke Bertrand told DailyMail.com. ‘I know she’s got her father [Jon Voight] but I don’t know how close they are.’
Elke was frozen out of the family by Angelina’s mother Marcheline Bertrand in 1985 after an argument following the death of Angelina’s grandfather Rolland Bertrand.
A source close to the family said Elke was left heartbroken by the fall out, but still loves Angelina and her other three grandchildren and misses them every day.

Asked if she ever wants to reconcile with her famous relative, she frowns: ‘No. I’ve got lots of friends. People keep me company when I’m feeling sick, I have plenty of visitors as well as the doctor.’
Despite having not seen Angelina since she was 10, Elke has always kept up with her life and was delighted when she announced she had a double mastectomy operation in 2013 to fight off her high chance of getting cancer.
Elke shared rare family photos with DailyMail.com from the days before their estrangement, which give an insight into Angelina’s unusual childhood.
She can be seen sporting a Thriller T-shirt with Elke and her brother James Haven as they all wear clown face paint.
In another shot, taken from earlier in Angelina’s childhood, the actress is shown holding a vase of flowers and smiling up at her surrogate grandmother.
The Maleficent star also cuddles her older brother in one of the rare snapshots.
James is the only family member that Angelina has remained close to, and he was seen spending some time with her children Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne in a Los Angeles park just two days before the divorce news broke.
Angelina and her brother infamously caused a stir in 2000 when they were seen kissing backstage at the Golden Globes, and again three months later at the Oscars.
After picking up her first Oscar – Best Supporting Actress for Girl, Interrupted – she opened her acceptance speech by telling the crowd ‘I’m so in love with my brother right now’.
Like Angelina, James was estranged from father Jon Voight for several years, during which time he legally removed his surname.
Angelina’s relationship with her father came to a head shortly after she adopted Cambodian born Maddox, who is now 15 years old, in 2002.
Jon spoke out in an interview at the time to say his daughter has ‘serious mental issues’, which caused the furious star to cut contact with him.
She retaliated: ‘They could have decided he’s right, she’s crazy, let’s remove that child from her custody, and that’s unforgivable.
