An official statement from Inter Miami read: “Inter Miami has provided an injury update to captain Leo Messi. 

Following a medical assessment, it has been determined that Messi has suffered a ligament injury in his right ankle. 

The captain’s availability will be determined based on his regular assessments and his recovery progress.”

The Argentine superstar could be out of action for a long time with the injury. 

Earlier this week, Inter Miami coach Tata Martino said Messi was expected to miss at least two games. However, the diagnosis was worse than the 61-year-old coach had expected.

This will be a major blow to Inter Miami, who are currently second in the MLS Eastern Conference standings.

Messi is having an impressive season in MLS, scoring 12 goals and providing nine assists in 12 appearances. However, Martino’s men have performed well without Messi, winning five of their last six games and will be hoping to continue that form until the 37-year-old recovers from injury.

Messi injured his right ankle and left the field in the 66th minute of the 2024 Copa America final, where Argentina beat Colombia 1-0 thanks to Lautaro Martinez’s extra-time winner. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was seen in tears on the bench with his ankle badly swollen and iced.
