Also in attendance were head writer Lorraine Broderick and casting director Judy Blye Wilson—the very person responsible for discovering Mark Consuelos.

During the panel, Andy Cohen highlighted some of Judy’s best casting decisions, naturally bringing up Mark’s name. In a heartfelt moment, Kelly Ripa took the opportunity to express her deep gratitude to Judy, saying, “Without Judy, I would literally have nothing. I would not have my husband, I would not have my children.” Her words were met with applause from the audience and her former colleagues, underscoring how pivotal Judy’s casting decision was for both Kelly’s personal and professional life.

Mark’s Journey to Landing the Role

Judy Blye Wilson shared a fascinating insight into the casting process that led to Mark’s All My Children debut. She revealed that while she had been convinced of Mark’s potential, other decision-makers were hesitant. Determined, she even showed Kelly a black-and-white photo of Mark, to which Kelly had an immediate positive reaction.

Despite Judy’s confidence in him, Mark had to go through multiple screen tests even after he had already started playing Mateo. Eventually, the production team made the final decision, allowing Mark to continue his 104-episode journey on the soap opera and, unknowingly at the time, embark on a lifelong romance with Kelly.

Longtime All My Children star Susan Lucci also reflected on Mark and Kelly’s palpable chemistry during the panel. She shared that when watching their audition scenes, the energy between them was so intense that those in the makeup room couldn’t help but take notice.

“We were all like, ‘Oh, get a room!’” Susan joked, recalling how evident their connection was even back then. The audience, along with Kelly, erupted in laughter at the remark, reminiscing on the undeniable spark that eventually led to a decades-long love story.
