Kelly Clarkson is weighing in on Beyoncé getting shut out of any nominations at the 2024 CMA Awards.

Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter received zero nominations for her debut album in the country music genre, which Clarkson finds odd.

“I kind of find it fascinating because I feel like those songs were everywhere,” Clarkson told NBC10 Boston.

Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” song was one of the most used songs on social media following its release. The song also reached the top of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs and Billboard’s Hot 100 charts.

Clarkson related to the struggle of cracking into country music, recalling that she tried to enter the market “years ago” and said she released two songs, adding, “That’s a hard industry even for me. Like, I was told at a lunch [that] if I didn’t quit pop music and just go country, I would not be played.”

“I was literally told that to my face at a lunch, and I was like, ‘OK, I mean, no offense, but I’m not ever going to just pick one,’” she continued.

Clarkson noted that it’s “more apparent now” that she likes to cross music genres, citing her “Kelleyoke” segment on her daytime talk show.

“I grew up on country music [and] I imagine Beyoncé did too. We’re both Texans so you can’t escape it growing up there,” she said. “I thought it would be a more welcoming environment, but it really wasn’t. That’s why I didn’t pursue it myself because it just seemed like the door was closed unless I was just all in and had to leave every other genre behind, which I don’t think people like me or even Beyoncé are capable of doing that.”

Clarkson said that she is “not necessarily shocked” by Beyoncé’s snub, noting, “It’s not necessarily about the awards” because people are still showing up for them at concerts.

“You don’t even need the award … you’re killing it regardless, people are showing up,” Clarkson said.

Kelly Clarkson’s comments on Beyoncé’s snub at the CMA Awards have sparked a conversation about diversity and inclusion in the country music industry. Beyoncé’s foray into country music with Cowboy Carter was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, yet the lack of recognition at the CMA Awards raises concerns about the industry’s willingness to embrace change.Clarkson’s own experience trying to break into the country music scene sheds light on the challenges artists face when straddling multiple genres. The pressure to conform to a specific sound or image can be stifling, as evidenced by Clarkson’s encounter with industry gatekeepers who advised her to abandon pop music in favor of a more “authentic” country sound. The notion that artists like Clarkson and Beyoncé must choose between genres in order to be taken seriously reflects a narrow-mindedness that overlooks the richness and diversity of musical expression. It is disappointing to see talented artists overlooked simply because they refuse to fit into a predetermined box. However, Clarkson’s remarks also highlight the resilience and determination of artists who refuse to be pigeonholed. Her refusal to compromise her artistic vision in the face of industry pressure is a testament to the power of staying true to oneself, even in the face of adversity. In the end, as Clarkson points out, awards are not the ultimate measure of success. What truly matters is the impact an artist has on their audience and the legacy they leave behind. Beyoncé’s influence extends far beyond accolades and trophies – her music resonates with audiences around the world and continues to inspire and uplift. As we reflect on Clarkson’s insights, let us remember the importance of celebrating diversity and inclusivity in music. Let us embrace artists who challenge conventions and defy expectations, and let us create a space where all voices can be heard and appreciated, regardless of genre or background. Only then can we truly honor the richness and beauty of the musical tapestry that unites us all.
