Joel Dommett is looking to expand his television hosting repertoire, setting his sights on one of Gino D’Acampo’s most beloved programs, Family Fortunes. 

Currently the face of The Masked Singer and I’m a Celebrity: Unpacked, Dommett has made it clear 

that he’s eager to take on another major role in British television, and Family Fortunes might be just what he’s looking for.

The popular ITV game show, which pits two families against each other to guess the most common responses to survey questions, 

has been a staple of British television since its debut in 1980. 

However, it is now facing a major shift. Following allegations of inappropriate and intimidating behavior against the current host, Gino D’Acampo, the future of the show has become uncertain. 

D’Acampo, who has presented Family Fortunes since 2020, has denied the accusations, calling them “deeply upsetting.” With his future on the show now in question, Dommett is eyeing the opportunity to take over the reins.

During a recent appearance on the Always Be Comedy podcast, Dommett openly admitted to hoping for a chance to step into the host’s role. “Now Gino D’Acampo is gone, maybe I’ve got the chance to slide in. I’ve been waiting for that,” he shared, clearly enthusiastic about the prospect of taking over one of ITV’s most iconic game shows. While the network has yet to confirm any official decisions regarding the future of the program, Dommett is hopeful that this shift could create a vacancy for him.

A Game Show Fanatic with Big Ideas

For Dommett, Family Fortunes holds a special place in his heart. “Honestly, Family Fortunes for me is the best show on telly,” he confessed, despite knowing it may not be everyone’s first choice. He explained that the beauty of the format lies in its balance between correct and incorrect answers, creating a game where both outcomes are equally satisfying for viewers. This, according to Dommett, is what makes the show so perfect.

The game itself, where two families compete to guess the most popular answers to questions based on a survey of the public, has been a long-running favorite. Though it has seen several hosts over the years, including Bob Monkhouse, Max Bygraves, and Les Dennis, it was Gino D’Acampo who returned the show to ITV screens in 2020. Under his hosting, the show garnered a solid fan base, but now, with his future on the show uncertain, Dommett sees a potential opening.

Dommett’s vision for Family Fortunes aligns closely with his love for humor and entertainment. He’s particularly inspired by the American version, Family Feud, which first aired in 1976. In fact, Dommett is a huge fan of the U.S. show, calling it “the best telly show in the world.” He believes that the British version could benefit from a fun twist that would bring it more in line with its American counterpart, where answers often lead to unexpected and humorous results.

“I would love to do the UK gig, but I would turn it into a different show,” Dommett explained. He referenced Family Feud, where responses to questions can range from the expected to the outlandish. “When they say ‘name a race,’ they want you to say ‘the 100 metres’ or ‘heptathlon,’ but someone might say ‘Chinese people,’ and everyone laughs. That’s what you need in it!”

A New Chapter for Family Fortunes?

While Dommett’s bold aspirations to take over the show are certainly intriguing, the future of Family Fortunes remains uncertain. The allegations against Gino D’Acampo have raised serious questions about his continued involvement, leaving the channel to make decisions about the show’s direction. If Dommett does indeed get the chance to host the game show, it would mark another significant career milestone for the 39-year-old, who has already made a name for himself with his charismatic hosting style on The Masked Singer and I’m a Celebrity: Unpacked.
