Gary Neville reveals the obstacle preventing him and David Beckham from rekindling their old friendship: “If it weren’t about my wife, maybe there would still be a chance” (video)

Gary Neville and David Beckham have always been good pals, but that doesn’t necessarily make them good room mates.

The two Manchester United legends joined the club’s academy in tandem back in 1991, and broke into the first team around the same time too.

As such, they were paired up as bunk-mates for overnight trips.

But according to Neville, by rooming together the pair encountered a couple of major problems that tested the limits of their friendship.

“I roomed with David Beckham for about six months and then the whole rooming

with players completely stopped because everybody went into their own individual rooms,” Neville told Sky Sports back in 2020.

“I think they worked out that players weren’t compatible with each other and that each went to bed at different times.

I had two big problems with Becks… I used to go to bed at 9pm and wake up at 5am, he would stay up until 11pm and want to wake up at 8am.

“So essentially he was keeping me up from nine until 11 and then I was getting him up at five in the morning. So it just wasn’t working at all.”

It wasn’t just that their sleeping patterns were out of synch though. Neville explained that their living habits were chalk and cheese, making them utterly incompatible as roommates.

“Secondly, he is the cleanest person,” he said. “He gets into his room, he lights candles, he puts pictures up everything has to be absolutely perfect, it’s been the same since he was 18. I just throw everything everywhere, so it just did not work at all.

“I’m always talking, always arguing and he was the complete opposite of that. He would listen to music, he would want peace, he would want to be chilled and it’s just the complete opposite end of the spectrum of where I was at.”

Hotel tension aside, Neville and Beckham had an electrifying partnership on the right flank for United, winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and one Champions League together. In 2003, Beckham moved to Real Madrid, ending their more-than-a-decade-long partnership.

Neville went on to make over 600 appearances for the Red Devils, and bagged another two Premier League crowns, three League Cups, an FA Cup and another Champions League before retiring in 2011. Beckham, meanwhile, won La Liga with Real before leaving for La Galaxy in 2007. He later had loan spells at AC Milan and Paris St Germain before retiring in 2013.
