While director Fisher Stevens wanted viewers to see a different side of the longtime couple, who are partly based in Miami, he was in for a bit of a surprise during filming.
Stevens opened up to Variety magazine about the process and what went on behind the scenes. Apparently, it wasn’t all kicks and giggles.

Especially that viral moment when the retired soccer star interrupts his wife’s sit-down at the couple’s mansion in the Holland Park area of London.

Stevens recounted how the scene came to be: Thinking that her husband was out, the fashion designer began to open up about their relationship, and how their upbringings were similar.

“We both come from families that work really hard,” she said. “We’re very working class.” Suddenly, Becks sticks his head through the door and shouts, “Be honest!” “I am being honest!” stammers the mother of four. “What car did your dad drive you to school in?” the retired baller demands. “It’s not a simple answer…it depends.” Realizing the inquisition won’t likely end, Posh admits her father drove her to school in a Rolls-Royce. “Thank you,” the InterMiami co-owner says and closes the door. Though this interaction seemed staged, it definitely wasn’t.

Stevens reports that he was completely taken aback by the impromptu grilling session, and thought he had a “deal” with Beckham that he would stay out during the shoot. As soon as Becks left the room, Stevens began texting his producing partner. “I’m going, ‘What the f— is David doing here?’” he recalled, adding that Victoria was shaken by the interruption. “She was very embarrassed and nervous, because clearly he’s been watching, and I was mortified myself.” After the crew convinced Beckham to leave, the interview resumed and ironically, Victoria seemed even more open than before. In the end, the doc didn’t come off as a “puff piece,” something that Beckham didn’t want and Stevens appreciated. “I think he wanted his wife to not do the typical thing, and that just freed her,” Stevens theorized. “Because then the next interview, that’s when she was like, ‘Ready, go.’ This interview changed everything. So it was kind of great he was there in a way, and it was a great moment for the movie, clearly. “But it p—ed me off.”
