Hoda Kotb was filled with fear as she remembered the time she needed urgent surgery in 2007: “I was pronounced deceased, HOWEVER…”

Former ‘Today’ host Hoda Kotb recently shared an update on her life years after her battle with breast cancer, reflecting on the experience that reshaped her journey in profound ways.

Kotb, now 60, never imagined she would receive a breast cancer diagnosis. Speaking candidly, she recalled the shock of hearing the news.

“I mean, there are people who are going to get breast cancer. I didn’t think I was one,” she admitted. “I mean, I ate apples and ran in Central Park. I was like me?

When they called me, they were like, ‘Oh, it’s you.’ I go, ‘It can’t be me. Why would it be me?’ I’ve never done any of the things that would lead to this diagnosis, but yet it came.”

At just 42 years old, Kotb received a call from her doctor’s office confirming the diagnosis. Her treatment plan included a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

Fortunately, since the cancer had not spread to her lymph nodes, she was able to avoid chemotherapy.

To aid in her recovery and reduce the risk of recurrence, she took tamoxifen, a medication that blocks the effects of estrogen, for five years.

Reflecting on her journey, Kotb shared words of encouragement for those facing a similar battle. “When it comes to breast cancer, it’s sort of like, get it early, get it out, and try not to be defined by it. It can shape you, but if it defines you, then you will spend your life feeling a certain way. So it’s like understanding this is part of me, but not all of me. It’s going to change me, and I’ll be different now.” She emphasized that, through it all, survivors often find themselves emerging stronger and more resilient.

Her experience with cancer had a lasting impact on multiple aspects of her life, including her plans for motherhood. In an episode of her Making Space podcast in August 2024, Kotb opened up about how the diagnosis changed her future. She recalled the heartbreaking moment when her doctor informed her that she would not be able to conceive children. “I was like, ‘Wait, what?’ So this thing not only put limits on my life but killed a dream,” she shared.

Despite this devastating revelation, Kotb remained determined to become a mother. In 2017, she fulfilled her dream by adopting her first daughter, Haley, who is now 9 years old. Two years later, she expanded her family by adopting another daughter, Hope, who is now 5.

Kotb has remained cancer-free since completing her treatment. Over the years, she has used her platform to raise awareness about breast cancer, advocating for early detection and encouraging others to prioritize their health. Her openness about her journey has inspired many, serving as a reminder that resilience and hope can emerge even from the most challenging circumstances.

After spending years as a beloved face on Today, Kotb stepped away from the show in January 2025. While she may have left her long-time position, her influence and contributions continue to impact those who have followed her journey. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, strength, and the ability to turn adversity into purpose.

As Kotb moves forward in this new chapter of her life, she remains focused on the future, embracing motherhood and continuing to inspire others with her unwavering positivity and resilience. Her journey serves as a beacon of hope for those facing their own battles, proving that even the darkest moments can lead to brighter days ahead.
