Kate Garraway has opened up about her journey of coping with grief and embracing life the way she believes her late husband, Derek Draper, would have wanted her to. 

The Good Morning Britain presenter shared her reflections in a new interview, discussing how she and her children are adjusting to life without him.

Adjusting to Life Without Derek

Derek Draper passed away on January 3, 2024, at the age of 56 after enduring severe health complications for nearly four years. 

The former political advisor and psychotherapist contracted Covid-19 in March 2020, which led to long-term health struggles. 

His condition worsened in December 2023 when he suffered a cardiac arrest, eventually slipping into a coma before passing away.

Since his death, Kate has been navigating life as a single mother to their two children, 18-year-old Darcey and 14-year-old Billy. In a candid interview with Hello! Magazine, she revealed that while grief is still very present, she is starting to look toward the future.

“I can begin to see a new positivity for the three of us – I am hoping. Where we don’t look back and remember: ‘This time last year we were doing this or that with Dad…’ but focus on the future,” she shared.

Honoring Derek’s Wish for Her to ‘Live’

Kate also reflected on what she believes Derek would have wanted for her after his passing. She explained that he would have encouraged her to embrace life rather than dwell on sorrow.

“Derek would want me to be grabbing life because you learn how fast, and how easily, it can be snatched away. I know he’d be saying: ‘You’ve got to get out and live, because I can’t,’” she said.

Despite the heartbreak, Kate is trying to shift her perspective and embrace the next stage of her life. With Darcey now at university and Billy growing older, she acknowledged that she is entering a bittersweet phase of parenting.

“It’s a sad time, really, because Derek and I had planned that when we had an empty nest, we’d travel together and do more grown-up things,” she said.

However, after spending years devoted to Derek’s care, she is also open to the idea of rediscovering herself.

“I’m thinking: ‘Well, I don’t know what’s next,’ but rather than be terrified, I’m trying to enjoy it,” she added.

The Financial Burden of Derek’s Care

While navigating grief, Kate has also been vocal about the financial struggles she endured while providing round-the-clock care for Derek. She previously revealed that she was paying £16,000 per month for his treatment—an expense that far exceeded her ITV salary.

In her 2024 documentary, Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story, she detailed the financial strain that came with Derek’s care, shedding light on the challenges many families face when dealing with long-term illness.

“Unlike the NHS, state-funded social care is only available to people with the highest needs and the lowest means,” she explained.

Kate has been candid about the substantial debt she now faces due to the overwhelming cost of private care.

“I was having to fund the situation. Now I’ve got excessive, unpayable debt because of it, and if I’m in that position, what else are people going to be?” she questioned.

Challenging the Government on Social Care Reform

On January 3, 2025, exactly one year after Derek’s passing, Kate used her platform to question Wes Streeting, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, on the government’s plans for long-term adult social care funding. She expressed frustration that proposed reforms would not be implemented until 2028, leaving many families struggling in the meantime.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, she said, “I’m going to be honest. In my mind, I’m thinking about the situation with Derek. It actually happens to be the anniversary of his death today, which is a day only relevant to me, but over the last few weeks, the family and I have been talking about the challenges we faced this time last year.”

She emphasized that one of the biggest struggles was the financial burden of care, adding, “In the meantime, I was lucky—I’ve got an incredible job that is well paid—but even I was struggling to cover the costs. If I’m in that position, what about others?”

Moving Forward While Keeping Derek’s Memory Alive

Kate’s journey has been one of resilience, love, and deep reflection. While the grief of losing Derek remains, she is slowly finding ways to move forward while honoring his memory. As she embarks on a new chapter of life, she remains committed to ensuring that the challenges she faced do not go unnoticed, advocating for better social care support for families across the UK.
