Simon Cowell has credited the Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) production team with saving his life after a terrifying audition almost ended in disaster. 

The 65-year-old judge, who is set to return for the 18th season of the ITV talent competition alongside Alesha Dixon, 

Amanda Holden, and Bruno Tonioli, found himself in a dangerously close call during a high-risk stunt.

The shocking moment unfolded when a blindfolded daredevil took to the stage, armed with a mallet and a lineup of watermelons.

What was meant to be an impressive display of precision quickly turned into a nightmare as Simon lay on stage, with the performer smashing watermelons mere inches from his head. 

The act took a frightening turn, causing Amanda and Alesha to scream in terror before a member of the health and safety team rushed in to intervene.

Once the act was abruptly halted, a visibly shaken Simon sat up, reportedly exclaiming, “Are you f**ing crazy?”* as he processed what had just happened.

Simon’s Close Call: ‘I Thought They Wanted to Kill Me’

Speaking about the near-disaster at a press preview for the show, Simon admitted that the moment felt surreal, almost as if someone was out to get him.

“It’s that feeling when you kind of think somebody doesn’t want you on the show anymore,” he joked. “It was the closest I’ve ever been to thinking, ‘they actually want to kill me.’”

He went on to describe how the performer’s nerves made the act even more dangerous.

“This guy got really nervous. He slipped, and he was shaking as he was smashing these watermelons,” Simon recalled. “Thank God for the health and safety guys. Normally, they can be quite annoying, but this time, they actually saved my life.”

Reflecting on the experience, Simon admitted that the gravity of the situation only fully sank in once he got home. “When you’re up there, you’re immersed in it. Then you go home and think, ‘That sht is dark. I nearly got killed twelve times.’”*

Amanda and Alesha’s Reactions: ‘It Was Horrific to Watch’

Amanda Holden shared her own perspective on the harrowing incident, admitting that it was one of the most distressing moments she had ever witnessed on the show.

“Seeing Simon in that position was horrific,” she said. “It was hard to watch, especially because he kept moving even after being told to stay still.”

She also pointed out that the stage conditions made the situation even more precarious. “The floor was wet from the smashed watermelons, making it even more dangerous. Any kind of safety measure that might have been in place went completely out the window.”

Alesha Dixon echoed Amanda’s sentiments, confessing that she genuinely feared for Simon’s safety. “I realized in that moment just how much I actually care about Simon,” she admitted. “It was terrifying to watch.”
