Damon Wayans caused a stir when he revealed the real reason behind his decision to “plot” his way out of SNL: “When your worth is being trampled on…”

Damon Wayans, known for his sharp comedic wit and roles in iconic projects like *In Living Color* and *My Wife and Kids*,

recently opened up about the incident that led to his firing from *Saturday Night Live* (SNL).

The comedian reflected on the lessons he learned from that pivotal moment in his career

and shared details about the creative risks that ultimately cost him his spot on the legendary late-night sketch show.

Wayans joined the cast of *SNL* during its 1985–1986 season, a period marked by significant changes and challenges for the show.

While his tenure on the program was brief, his talent and potential were evident, even if his time there was marred by creative frustrations.

The comedian’s departure from the show wasn’t voluntary. Wayans was fired after making an unauthorized creative decision during a live sketch. Reflecting on the experience, Wayans explained that he felt stifled creatively and sought to inject his unique comedic voice into a performance. However, the move went against the rules of the tightly controlled environment of *SNL*, where sketches are meticulously rehearsed and approved before airing.

The incident that led to Wayans’ firing occurred during a live episode. Feeling frustrated with his role in a particular sketch, he decided to go off-script and play his character in a way that had not been rehearsed or approved. While the moment may have been funny to some, it was a breach of the strict protocols that ensure *SNL* runs smoothly during its live broadcasts.

Lorne Michaels, the creator and longtime executive producer of the show, has famously emphasized the importance of adhering to the rules and respecting the collaborative process. Wayans’ decision to improvise was seen as a disruption to the carefully planned performance, and he was promptly dismissed from the cast.

Looking back, Wayans has expressed both regret and understanding about the situation. In interviews, he has acknowledged that his actions were driven by frustration and a desire to showcase his comedic talents in a way he felt the show wasn’t allowing. At the time, he believed that *SNL* wasn’t utilizing his full potential, leading to his decision to take matters into his own hands.

“I was young and hungry, and I wanted to make people laugh on my terms,” Wayans said. “But *SNL* is a machine, and you have to respect how it works. I learned that the hard way.”

Despite the setback, Wayans has also credited the experience with teaching him valuable lessons about professionalism, collaboration, and the importance of finding the right platform for his voice.

Being fired from *SNL* could have derailed Wayans’ career, but it ultimately became a turning point. Shortly after his departure, he joined his brother Keenen Ivory Wayans in creating *In Living Color*, a groundbreaking sketch comedy show that allowed him to fully express his comedic vision. The show, which aired from 1990 to 1994, became a cultural phenomenon and launched the careers of numerous stars, including Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, and Jennifer Lopez.

Wayans’ work on *In Living Color* showcased his ability to push boundaries and tackle social and cultural issues with humor and creativity, proving that his instincts were right—even if they didn’t align with *SNL*’s format.

Today, Wayans looks back on his *SNL* experience with a sense of humor and gratitude. While it wasn’t the right fit for him at the time, the lessons he learned helped shape his approach to comedy and his career. He has gone on to achieve success in television, film, and stand-up, cementing his place as a comedy icon.

“I’m grateful for every experience, even the tough ones,” Wayans said. “They all teach you something, and sometimes getting fired is just the universe telling you it’s time to move on to something better.”

Damon Wayans’ firing from *SNL* serves as a reminder that even setbacks can lead to greater opportunities. His journey from that pivotal moment to becoming a celebrated comedian and actor is a testament to resilience, creativity, and staying true to one’s vision. For Wayans, breaking the rules may have cost him a spot on *SNL*, but it ultimately paved the way for a career that has left an indelible mark on the world of comedy.
