The company behind soccer legend David Beckham, DB Ventures Limited, has settled its legal dispute with F45, the fitness franchise co-owned by Hollywood actor Mark Wahlberg.
The overdue $10 million lawsuit, which accused F45 of non-payment
for promotional efforts and was supposed to go to trial in 2025, has now been amicably resolved and dismissed from court.
This legal tussle began when DB Ventures accused F45 of failing to compensate Beckham as per their agreement,
which involved both cash and stock options linked to Beckham’s role as a brand ambassador.
According to the lawsuit, F45 did not distribute the agreed-upon shares within the stipulated timeframes after its public listing in 2021,
resulting in a significant loss in share value estimated at $9.3 million by the time of delivery.
Settlement Satisfaction Expressed
Dan Dienst expressed satisfaction over the settlement on behalf of DB Ventures and its parent entity Authentic Brands Group. “We are pleased to have resolved this issue, maintaining our stake in F45, and look forward to the company’s future successes,” he remarked.
F45’s CEO, Tom Dowd, reciprocated the sentiment, emphasizing the ongoing mutual respect and support between Beckham and the F45 brand. Dowd highlighted the robust growth of F45’s global franchises, which have recently posted impressive sales figures.
The dispute underscores the complexities of celebrity endorsements and business investments in the high-stakes fitness industry. Initially filed in 2022, the suit moved to federal court in May 2023, where Beckham detailed his agreement to endorse F45 in exchange for annual payments and shares, only to find the terms unmet.
While Beckham publicly praised the F45 training model after Wahlberg introduced it, tensions surfaced as promotional posts were removed and financial disagreements came to light. Despite F45’s attempt to dismiss the suit, a judge ruled in September 2023 to proceed with the case, underlining the severe legal interpretations involved in contractual agreements.
This settlement prevents a protracted legal battle and allows both parties to focus on their respective growth and strategic goals, signaling a continued albeit recalibrated collaboration.
