Messi is racing against time to recover from a hamstring injury ahead of Miami’s CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter-final first leg against Monterrey.

Despite a huge clash for Inter Miami against the Liga MX giants, head coach Martino insists there are no “risks” and says the Argentine’s injury is still unknown.

On Messi’s chances of playing, Martino told reporters: “Leo is injured and we have to manage his minutes. 

Tomorrow we have an important game but it’s April. For us, it’s just the beginning and the club can’t put the players’ condition at risk.”

“Basically, we will determine what is best for Leo and the team and then make the right decision. 

If Messi is not available from the start, the onus will be on Suarez to provide the firepower in attack.”

For his part, the Uruguayan insisted that Miami can succeed without Messi: “Messi is a player who makes the difference, we know that. We will wait until tomorrow to see if he is there, but if he is not, it is okay.”

“Like we did the other day and won the games without him. If he is there, we enjoy it more. The game continues, when the team is united and continues to move forward, that is the focus.”

Messi has been sidelined since March 13 with a hamstring problem that forced him off during Miami’s 3-1 win over Nashville in the Champions Cup.

Messi has trained with his teammates since then, but the possibility of El Pulga playing remains uncertain.
