Rihanna’s performance at the Brit Awards has suddenly gone viral again after the stage choreographer revealed shocking truths behind that performance
Gone were the Rastafari-inspired walls of a boisterous dancehall. Gone was the muted pink glow of a stripped-down living room.
When Rihanna performed earlier this week at the Brit Awards, she abandoned the Caribbean settings from the just-released dual videos for her number one hit “Work”, and instead emerged onstage in her own alternate universe.
Using her all-white ensemble of a crop top and fringed harem pants as a projection screen, splashes of fluorescent patterns fell across her body.
As she sang “Consideration” with SZA and “Work” with Drake, she practically morphed into an avatar.
For almost everyone watching, it was an unexpected and, well, electrifying interpretation of the island jam, but for Philippa Price, the director and multimedia artist behind the digitized settings, it’s hardly New Wave.
Price, who uses technology and sci-fi references in her hyper-surreal video work for the likes of Lion Babe and Brooke Candy
Tells us how the unconscious ’80s vibe of “Work” took her straight back to the future, and why she believes in the power of performance over video.
How did this collaboration come about?
Her team had seen some of my work and originally approached me about doing a video for her. That turned into creating this performance, which I’m really happy about. I much prefer creating performances. Videos now are so accessible and, in a way, disposable.
When Rihanna made her appearance at the Brit Awards, she left behind the familiar Rastafari-inspired dancehall and muted pink living room settings from her recent music videos. Instead, she captivated the audience with an all-white ensemble that served as a canvas for vibrant fluorescent patterns to dance across her body. Collaborating with director and multimedia artist Philippa Price, Rihanna transformed into a mesmerizing avatar on stage, giving a futuristic and unexpected twist to her hit songs “Consideration” and “Work”.For Price, known for her hyper-surreal video work with artists like Lion Babe and Brooke Candy, the ’80s vibe of Rihanna’s performance resonated deeply with her love for technology and sci-fi references. This collaboration was born out of mutual admiration, with Rihanna’s team approaching Price to create a performance that would showcase her unique style. Price’s preference for creating live performances over music videos stems from her belief in the power of a live experience to truly captivate an audience. In today’s world where music videos are easily consumed and quickly forgotten, Rihanna and Price’s collaboration stood out as a memorable and electrifying moment in music history. By blending technology, fashion, and music in a way that transports the audience to a different universe, Rihanna and Price have set a new standard for live performances in the digital age.Stay tuned for more updates on groundbreaking collaborations and performances that push the boundaries of art and technology.
