“He was like a father figure to me, but also a puppet master,” Rihanna said. “He would tell me what to wear, what to sing, who to date, how to act.
He would pressure me to do things that I didn’t want to do, like collaborate with certain artists or endorse certain brands. He would threaten to drop me from the label or ruin my reputation if I didn’t obey him.”

Rihanna said that she felt trapped and unhappy under Jay-Z’s control, and that she struggled with depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

She said that she finally decided to break free from him in 2019, when she launched her own label, Fenty Music, and her successful beauty and fashion lines.

“I realized that I had to take charge of my own destiny and be my own boss,” Rihanna said. “I wanted to make music that I loved, not what he wanted me to make.
I wanted to express myself and my creativity, not fit into a mold that he created for me. I wanted to be Rihanna, not Jay-Z’s protégé.”
Rihanna said that she has not spoken to Jay-Z since she left Roc Nation, and that she does not regret her decision.
She said that she feels more empowered, confident, and happy than ever before, and that she hopes to inspire other young artists to follow their dreams and not let anyone control them.

“I’m not here to bash Jay-Z or start a feud,” Rihanna said. “I’m just here to tell my truth and share my story. I’m grateful for the opportunities that he gave me, but I’m also proud of the choices that I made for myself. I’m not his puppet, I’m his peer. And I’m not afraid of him anymore.”
