In recent years, 30-year-old Watson has become a high-profile advocate for sustainability in fashion.
She is also known for championing women’s rights and gender equality as a UN Goodwill Ambassador.
“Watson will bring to the Board her commitment to sustainable development and women’s issues,” Kering said in a presentation of its annual general meeting.
Sustainability is an area of focus for the company. In 2017, it unveiled its 2025 sustainability strategy, in which it promised to reduce its environmental footprint by 40%.

Kering is a leading player in the global luxury market.
It is the parent company behind brands such as Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, and Alexander McQueen, and employs more than 38,000 people. In 2019, it generated €15.9 billion ($17.9 billion) in revenue.
Jean Liu, president of Chinese transportation company DiDi Chuxing, and Tidjane Thiam, a former CEO of Credit Suisse, were also appointed to the board.
