Maleficent star Angelina Jolie has discussed the beauty of having adopted children Maddox Chivan, Pax Thien, and Zahara Marley – all of whom she shares with her ex-husband Brad Pitt
Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has spoken of the importance of honouring her adopted children’s roots.
The Maleficent star, 45, has three adopted children with her ex-husband and fellow Oscar-winning actor Brad Pitt.
They are Maddox Chivan, 18, Pax Thien, 16, and Zahara Marley, 15.
Brad and Angelina also have three biological children: daughter Shiloh, 14, and 11-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.
Speaking to Vogue, Angelina discussed how she wanted to make sure her children felt their geographic and cultural origins were being honoured.
Her eldest son Maddox comes from Cambodia, while Pax is from Vietnam, and Zahara is from Ethiopia.
Angelina said: “What is important is to speak with openness about all of it and to share. ‘Adoption’ and ‘orphanage’ are positive words in our home.
“With my adopted children, I can’t speak of pregnancy, but I speak with much detail and love about the journey to find them and what it was like to look in their eyes for the first time.”
The Girl, Interrupted actress also addressed what adopted parents owe to their children when their background is so different to their own.
Angelina added: “All adopted children come with a beautiful mystery of a world that is meeting yours.
“When they are from another race and foreign land, that mystery, that gift, is so full.
“For them, they must never lose touch with where they came from. They have roots that you do not. Honor them. Learn from them.
“It’s the most amazing journey to share.”
She concluded: “They are not entering your world — you are entering each other’s worlds.”
Jolie had been in a relationship with Brad Pitt since 2005 before they finally married in 2014.
Their marriage ended two years later in 2016 when they separated and Angelina filed for divorce, before going on to share custody of their children.
Angelina and Brad finalised their divorced last year.
She had previously been married to actor Johnny Lee Miller from 1996 to 1999, before then marrying actor Billy Bob Thornton from 2000 to 2003.
The actress is due to star in Marvel superhero film The Eternals as the warrior Thena, due in cinemas in 2021.
