Jenna Bush Hager and Savannah Guthrie tear up live on air as they come to terms with the uncertainty of their futures amid mass layoffs.

Jenna Bush Hager and Savannah Guthrie have long been known for their close friendship,

but Tuesday’s episode of Today revealed just how deeply their families are connected.

The heartfelt moment came as Savannah promoted her latest children’s book, Mostly What God Does Is Love You,

and enlisted a very special interviewer—her 10-year-old daughter, Vale.

The touching segment not only showcased Savannah’s bond with her daughter

but also led to an emotional revelation from Jenna, who shared just how much the Guthrie family means to her.

A Special Interview with a Special Guest

Savannah’s book, Mostly What God Does Is Love You, is a children’s adaptation of her 2024 work, Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere. To celebrate the release, she let Vale take the reins in an interview that warmed hearts everywhere.

With her younger brother, Charley, watching from behind the cameras, Vale sat down with her mother to discuss the book, their family’s faith, and Savannah’s desire to pass down her beliefs in a way that feels natural and loving.

The sweet exchange left Jenna in tears.

“I want to weep because I’ve known Vale-y every day since she was born—many of us have—but also, I’m so lucky to be her godmother,” Jenna said, her voice full of emotion as tears rolled down her face.

Savannah, moved by the moment, laughed and responded, “Look at you crying! You’re going to make me cry!”

A Bond That Extends to Their Children

Jenna and Savannah’s friendship goes beyond their time on television—it is deeply woven into their family lives.

Later in the show, during Jenna & Friends, the former first daughter revealed an even more personal connection.

“One of the things you may not know about Savannah and me is that Savannah is my son Hal Hager’s godmother, and I am her daughter Vale’s godmother,” Jenna shared.

Jenna, who shares three children—Mila, 11, Poppy, 9, and Hal, 5—with her husband Henry Hager, emphasized how important faith-based conversations have been in their friendship.

“We have really big conversations about faith together,” she said.

Savannah agreed, explaining that these discussions partly inspired her to write her latest book.

“Even with people I know, it kind of opened up this new avenue for deeper conversation,” she said. “It doesn’t mean that you agree. In fact, you could be of different faiths or no faith at all. But having that connection and talking about things that matter—that’s what I feel like I notice most on the book tour. There’s such a hunger and thirst for that kind of dialogue.”

Friendship Passed Down to the Next Generation

Their friendship isn’t just limited to them—Jenna and Savannah’s daughters, Mila and Vale, have developed their own close bond, mirroring their mothers’ relationship.

The two girls have shared many special experiences together, including attending a White House event, where they were seen giggling and embracing.

Jenna and Savannah have also taken family trips together, including a 2024 getaway to Palm Beach, Florida.

“We planned this, I think, before 2024,” Jenna recalled on Today. “We planned it because Vale was baptized. And Mila said, ‘Girls, I feel like we need a girls’ trip.’”

A Friendship Built on Love, Faith, and Family

Savannah’s newest project, Mostly What God Does Is Love You, is not just another book—it’s a reflection of the values she shares with her family and her closest friends. With Vale taking part in the book’s promotion, it’s clear that Savannah has passed down not just her faith, but also her love of storytelling and deep conversations.

Jenna’s emotional reaction to Vale’s interview was a testament to the lifelong friendship these two women have built. It’s a connection that extends beyond the screen—one rooted in mutual support, love, and a shared belief in the importance of faith and family.

And just as Savannah and Jenna have leaned on each other through life’s moments, their children are growing up side by side, continuing the legacy of a friendship worth aspiring to.
